What if Jane Bennet Weren’t as Nice?

How would Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice be if Jane Bennet wasn’t as nice and sweet? Find out in these JAFF fan fictions and variations!

Have you ever wondered what would have happened in Pride & Prejudice if Jane weren’s as nice and sweet as she is in Jane Austen’s work?

There aren’t a whole lot of fan fictions where Jane is meaner than canon. Most of the time, people make her almost too sweet and good. This makes me want to write my own version! (I’ve added to my list.)

Still, I’ve been able to find some of my favorites where her character is different than in the original work.

These Pride & Prejudice variations range from Jane being just a bit selfish and grumpy (like encouraging Elizabeth to marry Mr. Collins) all the way to downright evil.

I hope you enjoy them! Let me know which ones end up being your favorites!

The Truth about the Merry Widow: A Pride and Prejudice retelling full of rumours and villains by Enid Wilson

What if Mr. Bennet had gambling debts and sold Elizabeth to husband number one when she was only fifteen? That’s what happens in The Truth about the Merry Widow: A Pride and Prejudice retelling full of rumours and villains by Enid Wilson.

Six years later, cleared of the murder of husband number two, Elizabeth is back in Meryton. Rumour has it that she is a childless woman now on the lookout for husband number three. Instead of being welcomed home by her neighbours, Elizabeth is confronted with attempted murder, and met by gunshots, an imposter, a slave trader, a Mongolian warrior and more.

Fitzwilliam Darcy visits Meryton where he finds himself embroiled with bandits. He is warned that the Merry Widow is a seasoned fortune-hunter and yet he is dangerously tempted by her. Mr Darcy then finds himself set upon, blackmailed and kidnapped. Will he prevent calamity for himself and his loved ones? Or will Mr Darcy succumb to the Merry Widow’s charms and become Elizabeth’s husband number three?

This steamy, funny Pride and Prejudice what-if story explores this scenario with wit, emotion and intriguing plot twists. Be warned: this Regency drama contains explicit adult content, a rendezvous in an attic and a daily dose of belladonna.

Mr. Darcy – A Man of Honour by Jadie Brooks

Mr. Darcy – A Man of Honour by Jadie Brooks asks several questions:

What if Mr. Darcy came into Meryton with the idea of seeking a wife and was first attracted to Jane Bennet?

What if Jane Bennet was not a sweet, kind young woman everyone thought she was?

How would things play out for Darcy and Elizabeth when he found out his error after he was engaged to Jane?

Memory: A Tale of Pride and Prejudice: Lasting Impressions by Linda Wales

What effect would the sight of their soul mates have upon Darcy and Elizabeth if it occurred at a much earlier and vulnerable moment? This is what happens in Memory: A Tale of Pride and Prejudice: Lasting Impressions by Linda Wales.

How would this shared memory change his advance into arrogance and pride, and her sensitivity to the opinions of others? And ultimately, what will happen when they finally meet somewhere beyond their imaginations?

The Memory series is a story of family, and how the love affair of one couple influences the lives of everyone around them. Volume 1: Lasting Impressions begins on a fateful day in Hyde Park when 15-year-old Elizabeth Bennet spies the handsome 22-year-old Fitzwilliam Darcy. Instead of wondering over his status: bachelor, rich, gentleman . . . all of the qualities she had been taught by her mother to seek for her husband, she saw only the sorrowful man in need. Darcy heard laughter and saw a girl and a smile. Both have much to overcome before they can be together, but one thing is certain, they would have loved each other no matter where or when they had met.

The story continues in Volume 2: Trials to Bear, and Volume 3: How Far We Have Come. These stories contain scenes of a mature nature.

Mendacity & Mourning: A Pride & Prejudice Variation by Jan Ashton

In the book Mendacity & Mourning: A Pride & Prejudice Variation by Jan Ashton, it is a truth universally acknowledged that a gossip in possession of misheard tales and desirous of both a good wife and an eager audience need only descend upon the sitting rooms of a small country town in order to find satisfaction. And with a push from Lady Catherine, Mr. Collins sets alight a series of misunderstandings, rumours, and lies that create obstacles to a romance between Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet.

This slightly unhinged romantic comedy follows Darcy as he sets off to find himself a wife and instead finds himself pulled into the mire of his aunt’s machinations and his own fascination with Elizabeth, whom he believes betrothed to another.

As Meryton judges him the grieving groom of Anne de Bourgh and a caddish dallier with the hearts of others, Darcy must ferret out the truth behind his cousin’s disappearance, protect his sister from the fretful fate of all Fitzwilliam females, and most importantly, win Elizabeth’s heart.

In the Wilds of Derbyshire by Jann Rowland

In In the Wilds of Derbyshire by Jann Rowland, Elizabeth is rejected by a sister who has allowed her new status as wife to Mr. Bingley to make her proud.

This results in Elizabeth going to her uncle’s estate in Derbyshire, ostensibly to assist her cousin in her introduction to society. In reality, Elizabeth feels there is nothing left for her in the neighborhood of her birth.

Imperative: A Tale of Pride and Prejudice by Linda Wells

Fitzwilliam Darcy is a man with a great many secrets to keep in Imperative: A Tale of Pride and Prejudice by Linda Wells. One involves his sister, and the other involves his heart.

The problem is, he cannot just keep the secrets. They demand attention, and action, and in hopeless times, a good man does not always think things through, even when he is desperately trying to do the right thing for the two most important women in his life.

In Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Fitzwilliam Darcy arrived in Ramsgate before his sister could leave with George Wickham. Things are not so easily remedied in this two-volume variation.

This story contains scenes of a mature nature between a happily married couple.

Happier in her Friends than Relations: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by Jayne Bamber

Fitzwilliam Darcy is faced with a family crisis of epic proportions in Happier in her Friends than Relations: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by Jayne Bamber after the fallout of his sister Georgiana’s ill-fated elopement in Ramsgate, while his friend Charles Bingley is persuaded to abandon his scheme of renting Netherfield Park.

Elizabeth Bennet journeys to London to recover her spirits after Jane’s unexpected marriage changes the sisters’ relationship forever, and despite an attempted reconciliation, Jane is revealed to be far from the angel Elizabeth has always admired.

The bonds of friendship offer Elizabeth a lifeline after a series of tragic events causes her to fear for her future. The support she receives from her new neighbor Marianne Brandon, and snarky socialite Lady Rebecca Fitzwilliam, may yet prove to heal her broken heart and bring her closer to a happily ever after. The wide array of characters from throughout Austen’s works teach Elizabeth Bennet that she is truly happier in her friends than relations.

A Father’s Sins: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by J. Dawn King

In A Father’s Sins: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by J. Dawn King, Mr. George Darcy, father of an illegitimate child raised by his steward, Mr. Wickham, agreed with his wife, Anne, that the firstborn son of their marriage would be heir to Pemberley. However, Mr. Darcy loved his eldest son, George Wickham, and indulged him by bringing him to Pemberley to live after the death of his wife. His heir, Fitzwilliam Darcy, paid a heavy price for this decision.

Mr. Thomas Bennet, an educated gentleman and father of five daughters, favored his second born, Elizabeth. Unexpectedly, his wife gave birth to a son and heir. Mr. Bennet, at the persistent urging of his wife, chose not to have his youngest children vaccinated for smallpox. When the plague hit Longbourn it devastated their family. Elizabeth paid the heaviest price for this decision of her father.

What happens when Darcy and Elizabeth meet? Will they be able to overcome the consequences of the choices their fathers made? When George Wickham, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Mr. William Collins, and the Fitzwilliam family arrive in Meryton, how will that impact their growing attraction? How does the same decision by Mr. Bennet influence the relationship between Jane Bennet and Mr. Bingley? Will love have a chance?

Colonel Darcy: An Elizabeth and Darcy Story by Timothy Underwood

Elizabeth and Georgiana were childhood best friends in Colonel Darcy: An Elizabeth and Darcy Story by Timothy Underwood.

Elizabeth always admired and adored her best friend’s big brother. Fitzwilliam Darcy was the second son, and he joined the army. He was terribly wounded and then captured in a lost battle in India. While Darcy was a prisoner, Elizabeth and Georgiana kept writing letters to him, so that he would know they had never forgotten about him.

When he was finally released, Darcy received all of these letters at once, and on the ship home, he fell in love with Elizabeth through reading her letters to him.

But in England Mr. Bennet had died, and Elizabeth’s family was forcing her to marry a vile baronet…
